What better day to celebrate the beautiful land of our country, than on Canada Day!? All of us at BDirty couldn’t agree more. The sun is out to stay (we hope), new blossoms are flourishing, and fresh fruit and vegetables are thriving on the Farmstead. Today we want to share with you some of our favourite ways to be waste-free as we celebrate Canada, this glorious land we call home.
Eco-Friendly Waste-Free Lifestyle Choices Made Easy
Whether your Canada Day is filled with sun soaked beach time, a backyard bbq, or a park and parade, it’s the perfect opportunity to switch from using disposable picnic gear to waste-free reusable items! With the entire Country celebrating, can you imagine how many trash cans are filled to the brim with these items? Gross.
So…how do we enjoy this amazing 150th birthday celebration without polluting our Provinces and Territories?
Create your own BBQ Picnic Kit!
Since we are celebrating all things Canadian, check out this proudly Canadian company: Fenigo – Everything for a Litterless Lunch https://www.fenigo.com/brands
Fenigo has everything you need to create your own ultimate waste-free picnic kit! We picked out two kit items we love from Fenigo and also have a couple of tips to help you get started:
- Make finger-foods instead of food that needs cutlery
- Check out these amazing re-usable bamboo cutlery picnic sets
- Say “no” to straws unless they are reusable
- Use washed sauce jars as your water bottle or glass
- When packing your picnic go to your local farmer’s market with your own bags. Skip the small plastic produce bags
It’s easy to get started – just trying one tip on our list will have a huge impact over time. Are you up for the challenge to keep Canada green?
Farmstead Plant of the Month
Spinach and Strawberries
July is a month full of some of the country’s best fruit and vegetables! Farmers all around Canada are currently harvesting late spring spinach and lush strawberries. And so are we!
Strawberries are a favourite on the Farmstead packed full of antioxidants and vitamin C – healthy, delicious and a gorgeous red for Canada Day!
Try this brightly coloured salad, filled with 4 of the freshest locally-grown produce. Because of our cool spring we are harvesting the last of the spring spinach on the Farmstead!
