At BDirty Co we think February is the perfect month to show your love to the Honey Bee.  They need our affection now more than ever.  With the decline of Honey Bees in epidemic proportions worldwide we need to start romancing bees like our life depends on it…because it does!

More than three-quarters of the world’s food crops rely in part on pollination by honey bees, other insects & animals. The world would be a very different place without colourful flowers and juicy fruits. At BDirty Co we love our bees, here are some tips for you to share the love as well!

5 Ways to Romance Your Honey … Bee

1. Show up with flowers

Even though Spring is still weeks away, it’s never too early to start planning for pollen-rich blossoms for honey bees to forage. The BDirty Co team was excited to find that West Coast Seeds has the perfect method to start growing lavender, an extremely accessible flower … even in February!

2. Show a little PDA (or a lot)

Mass produced honey from large corporations, is often found loaded with antibiotics, additives, and even metals.   YUCK!  Give local honey bees the affection they deserve by purchasing honey from local chemical-free natural and sustainable beekeepers.  There are so many great beekeepers in Canada using safe practices for the bees, the planet, and you.

One Root, located in Ontario Canada, uses ethical and organic beekeeping methods that has us smoochin’ the ground they walk on!  Read all about their ethics and practices here.

3. Be sweet and romantic

DON’T KILL BEES, EVER. There, we said it.

4. Snuggle up and watch Netflix

With all of the docuseries on Netflix, we were thrilled here on the Farmstead to find “Rotten: Episode 1”: a look into the international honey industry.  We love our sweet sister bees, and hate to see that so many companies have taken advantage of their golden gift of honey-making.

5. Shout your love from the rooftop!

Okay, shouting may not be necessary, but using your voice is an easy way that can make a huge impact on the lives of honey bees.  We’re not asking you to stand in the streets to protest (we’re a chill hive).   We’re asking you to spread the love this month and share your compassion for these hard little worker bees. By inspiring those around you to appreciate all that bees do for us so we can all protect them from disappearing.
