May is all about moms!
Did you know BDirty’s founder Kate was first inspired by moms-to-be to share our product with all of you? She had been gifting raw honey deodorant to friends to help them stay fresh and aluminum-free during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and was surprised to find their husbands and partners loved the product just as much. Deodorant theft was on the rise, and that’s when Kate decided to launch her line of natural deodorant to the world! Celebrate “the birds and the bees” with us: At our Farmstead, the bees are busier than ever and our favourite hummingbirds are back to build their nests…which means babies will be arriving soon.

The World Of Wellness
Being an expectant mother is a beautiful experience, but at times it can also be an overwhelming one. It’s hard enough to find time in your schedule for self-care as you to try to balance work and all of the changes your body is experiencing, let alone dedicate time to researching the safest health products for you and your baby.
The solution? Take a look at Lemon and Lee. This Vancouver-based website is home to a community of moms who curate, review and approve baby products, so you can make informed decisions without having to spend hours and hours of your time researching the products. Approved by moms, for moms – it doesn’t get any better than that!
The Farmstead Apothecary
At BDirty Co., we’re all about using healing herbs on our Farmstead. Many herbs offer benefits that can help offset some of the less pleasant physical changes moms experience during pregnancy. ginger and peppermint are at the top of our list to make your pregnancy all the sweeter, but you may also be interested in checking out some other pregnancy power herbs here.
Our favourite Farmstead nausea remedy is homemade popsicles…they are sooooo cool and soothing. These ice pops are deliciously light and easy to digest. Plus, when you infuse them with tummy-soothing herbs like fresh ginger and peppermint, your raw honey frozen treat is blissfully restorative. Here is our very own Farmstead recipe:

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Makes 6-8 pops in the Onyx popsicle molds (see our Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Choices section below for more info)
Organic Ingredients
- Fresh peppermint leaves, crushed (or 1 T dried peppermint leaves)
- 2 ½ inch piece of ginger, peeled and grated
- 3 fresh lemons, zested and juiced (or ½ cup lemon juice)
- ½ – ¾ cup raw honey (if you like a bit of tartness, then use only ½ cup)
- 3 ½ cups water
Preparation
- Place all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Reduce temperature to a simmer until the mixture becomes slightly thicker, about 15 minutes.
- Pour the liquid through a sieve, and cool on the counter.
- Once cool, pour into the popsicle molds and place in the freezer, being careful not to tip them. If you have extra mixture after filling the molds, you can store it in the fridge for up to one week.
- Freeze the ice pops for about 8-12 hours.
- ENJOY!

Farmstead Plant of the Month: Peppermint
We love growing patches of peppermint on the Farmstead. The crisp, cool fragrance of this herb can make you feel better instantly. It’s also known to boost your mood and refresh the mind. Pregnant ladies may be interested to know that peppermint is also considered a remedy for indigestion and nausea!
Here are some tips for enjoying the many benefits of peppermint:
- Ward off nausea: Place peppermint leaves in your mouth before brushing your teeth in the morning.
- Eliminate bad breath: Chew on a few peppermint leaves.
- Detoxify your medicine cabinet: You can replace chemical mouthwash with peppermint by simply boiling a few peppermint leaves in water, straining it and letting the mixture cool. Then go ahead and gargle!
- Mix some raw honey into a class of peppermint tea for a soothing sipper. We love the organic Peppermint Amour loose leaf blend from DAVIDsTEA.
